Tim Eichwald, Interdisciplinary Sculpture, 2023
After completing his associates in art at the Community College of Philadelphia, Tim migrated to Baltimore to finish out his BFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art. As a nerd from a very young age, Tim was excited to find a university that encouraged its students to incorporated science and technology into their practice. After spending an inordinate amount of time in the apparel industry, Tim is looking forward to making new and interesting art.
Skill Building
A series of technical exercises build and demonstrate skills in Rhino, laser cutting, 3D printing, and CNC routing.

Project I: Roll for Initiative
This is a dodecahedron cut from cardboard in two sections with a laser. Half of the dodecahedron is lined with chipboard that was cut, scored, and folded to conform to the space. This lining features cutouts to mimic the look of a twelve-sided die.

Project II: The Amazing Spider-glue
No spiders were harmed in the making of this sculpture.
This project involved designing an object to make a mechanical connection to a preexisting, or found, object. Here, I measured and recreated the bottle portion of a Tacky Glue bottle. The mechanical connection is the threaded neck of the bottle which mates with the original cap. The spider legs were printed separately and attached with glue. The model was then finished with Krylon and Montana paints.

Project III: The Cacophonous Caterpillar
The third and final project was a collaboration between each and every member of the Intro to Digital Fabrication class. Together, we designed and fabricated four modules that each enclosed to two people. These modules were then outfitted with instruments, covered in fabric to to suggest the appearance of a caterpillar, and finally connected together with canvas strips. The project culminated in a “mobile concert,” as the Cacophonous Caterpillar beat a noisy path from the Station building, up Mt. Royal avenue, then back from whence it came.

Research
America has long had an issue with gun violence that has frequently been attributed to the widespread proliferation of firearms among its citizens. While many concerned residents and politicians have advocated for tighter restrictions on the sale and possession of firearms, the advancement of technology continues make this approach difficult if not impossible.
