
Interdisciplinary Sculpture, ’23
An interdisciplinary sculptor from Singapore, Kester enjoys the meticulous construction of forms that reflects his thoughts and emotional states, he draws on personal experiences that he attempts to translate into physical forms through his work. Throughout his practice, he seeks to find a balance between working intuitively and taking care to maintain a high level of craftsmanship while working with advancing technologies.

A series of technical exercises build and demonstrate skills in Rhino, laser cutting, 3D printing, and Grasshopper.

Project I: Butterfly
Using Rhino to design and layout the laser cut-out to be later assembled by hand with brass tubing, canvas and PLA.
The design of the contraption allows the butterfly to move in a circular direction while flapping its wings. This action is randomized by the gentle offset of the main rotational disk in the centre of the contraption.

Project II: Catus Plant Salt & Pepper Cap (MARCUN Grinder)
Using Rhino to prepare a file for 3D printing, this work is a custom made Salt and Pepper Cap that has been fitted to MARCUN Grinder’s, hoping to bring life and humour to the commonly used everyday objects like the Salt and Pepper.

Project III: Helix Totem
A class totem project, where every student is required to design a section of the totem and to be printed using the 3D printer. Once printed it would be assembled to create a long standing totem that would represent each person in the class of 2020. It is also boasts the capabilities of learning a new programme and create an artwork with a community within the hard times of the global pandemic.

Research – Digital Fabrication in the Designing and Manufacturing of Traditional Musical Instruments
Abstract:
Through the research on 3D manufacturing, we look to see how the advancement of this technology provided the capabilities to “print” musical instruments rather then painstakingly hand crafting them. We will be looking at two case studies Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and MONAD STUDIO, to see how they approach this subject of the designing and manufacturing of traditional musical instruments. From this we will see if 3D printing musical instruments is the way forward for the creation of traditional musical instruments.
