Skill Building

A series of technical exercises build and demonstrate skills in Rhino, laser cutting, 3D printing, and CNC routing.

Project I: Rained

This piece reveals loneliness in toilets. I want to visualize emotions within a public restroom, a small private island in public spaces.

Process

I laser cut an acrylic sheet to build an inner transparent structure for the water facet and wrapped it with toilet paper, which I engraved in a poem, “To the Daffodil,” by Chung Ho-seung using laser cut.

Project II: Worship

I wanted to talk about admiring someone. I used PVA to experiment. My goal was to make a water bottle that melts right after it. So it leaks water and finally collapses itself. I wanted to talk about how the failure or struggle of someone who wants to reach the ideal figure.

Process

I 3d printed the bottom part of the water bottle. I put water in the part, but it did not dissolve and did not collapse. Next time, I would like to do an experiment with a thinner layer so that it can be melted.

Project III: Flower Blooms in Cloudy Words.

The title came from the title of the same tile of the book of poetry by Shin Kyu Park (박신규). When I first entered the Dfab as a Ryan tour first-year student, I saw one print Korean poem in the Dfab shop written “우리 서로 사랑하면 언제라도 봄” This is kind of my reply to the print. I wanted to share that cloudy moments turn into something beautiful and alive.

Process

Before we changed our plan to expand the garden, I met with Sarah Doherty and discussed what our class thought about activating the garden and what more things we could consider in the class. Michelle and I take outside-of-class time. We measure the garden and analog and transfer it into a rhino to make a model. After we changed our plan to make a footpath for the garden, I made one of the designs for the footpath and chose 3rd part to mill the mold. After that, we put cement in the mold to cure.
