Currently obtaining her BFA, at Maryland Institute College of Art, Octavia
Simms-Clark b. 2001, Baltimore, is a multidisciplinary painter and architect with a studio
practice focused on portraying the human experiences through our shared inhabited space.
Both Simms-Clark’s paintings and architectural practice source from an extensive photo
diary in order to portray the delicate yet transient symbiosis of the human and natural
world . She utilizes watercolor, acrylic, oil, and dry mediums to create the majority of her
works and doesn’t hesitate to mix media on the same canvas or combine the synthetic and
organic. Interested in urban planning and design, Simms-Clark’s humanistic studies fuel
her interest in finding practical applications of architectural design in an effort to address
past and present socio-economic strife.

Project III: Xmas Tree

This project was a collaboration in order to create a modern interpretation of a Christmas tree. The project mostly used cnc milling however we also used hand sanding and routing to finish off the wooden pieces.

Process

In this project I was mainly in charge of the design of the first layer of branches. Secondly, I did the “flat routing” to take the onion skin off of each branches piece and then routed with a round bit to give each piece a rounded, more finished appearance. I also helped sand some of the branch pieces and a portion of the core pieces.
