Chantel, Graphic Design, 2025/26

Chantel Harrison is a senior Graphic Design major with a passion for branding and digital illustration. Her sculpture coursework piqued an interest in digital fabrication, which she hopes to incorporate into her future career. Chantel plans to craft impactful designs that merge creativity, innovation, and meaningful connections.

Skill Building

A series of technical exercises build and demonstrate skills in Rhino, laser cutting, 3D printing, and CNC routing.

Project I: Luminous Object

For this assignment, I designed a custom lightbox inspired by my son, who’s a passionate train enthusiast. His favorite color is blue, and he especially loves steam trains—so I chose a classic steam engine as the focal point of the piece. I crafted the frame from cherry plywood, laser-cut to size with finger joints to hold the box securely together. To create a sense of depth, I layered various weights of paper and placed an LED light strip in the back, bringing the scene to life with a warm, dimensional glow.

Project II: Loc Styling Tool Display

For this assignment, we began by replicating an object in Rhino with the goal of 3D printing it. I chose to recreate a loc styling tool. Using leftover cherry plywood from my previous project, I laser-cut each side of the display stand, incorporating finger joints for assembly. After 3D printing the initial version of the tool, I made a few modifications—adding a hole for hanging—and printed multiple copies. I also designed and 3D printed hooks, which I attached to the stand to display the tools neatly.

Project III: Privacy Screen

For this class project, our group collaborated to create a privacy screen, with each student designing a unique panel. As a team, we worked together to determine the overall style and layout. Once the design direction was finalized, a shared template file was created for everyone to use. For my panel, I chose an abstract composition using rectangles, designed to allow light to pass through and create interesting patterns.
