Ian Ong, Sculpture Major and Product Design Minor, Sophomore

Hello! I’m an aspiring prop maker from Singapore! My work is largely 3D based, and I’m currently really interested in creating mechanical and wearable sculptures.

Laser Cutting: Summer

Project I: Lotus Key

A mechanical sculpture inspired by the mechanisms of a corkscrew! Wanted to create a mechanism that plays on the satisfaction of the opening and closing of corkscrew arms.

Project II: Techno-Magical Anvil

I attempted to create a magical anvil that is powered by a glowing crystal!

Replicated a jeweller’s anvil I have in rhino, modelled hexagonal sockets, extra aesthetic details and a hole at the bottom for an electronic tea candle. Modelled and 3D printed a ‘gem holder’ for a crystal I have that sits within the hexagonal socket.

Project III: Modular diamonds

As part of our CNC group project, we designed and milled a series of modular diamonds that served as the base for several computer generated video projections.

Research: Digital Fabrication and Prosthetics

Digital Fabrication has allowed for a huge jump in the possibilities of human technology, and one particular area this shines is with prosthetics. This research article goes over a brief view on some of the prosthetics out there today, as well as newer technologies on the horizon.
