Maria Barceló Tous, Interdisciplinary Sculpture, 2027
“Soy como un árbol, con las raíces en un país y las ramas abiertas al mundo” – Eduardo Chillida (I am like a tree, with roots in a country and branches open to the world.)
Maria Barceló Tous is a MICA student in interdisciplinary sculpture. She was born and raised in Mallorca, Spain, where language and culture are slowly being lost, and Maria wants to change that. In her art, she gives voice to the disappearing culture and knowledge of nature that is occurring in Mallorca due to globalisation. Drawing on Mallorcan folklore, she synthesises the traditional with innovative means.

Project I: “Planta carnívora”
Venus flytrap can be killers, protection, decoration and even beings of light. It is interesting how a plant can be lots of things depending on who sees it. At the same time, this piece does not seem like a Venus flytrap the first time you see it, it is like seeing a new plant without judging what you already know about it.

Process
This process has been complicated because I did not know the materials and I had to discover and solve them while I was making the piece.

Project II: Old
3D printing and old pictures by my family.
Project III: Christmas tree
Process
I worked of two desings of the branches, also I finish mailing some parts of the trunk and I was part of the assembly.
