Rafael J Rodriguez-Sanchez – Portfolio

Fibers, ’21

As a fashion designer, I am interested in an understanding of how digitally fabricated can enhance garment design in order to further the message not only in imagery but also in a new way of creating texture in the fabric. The goal for me in this class is to not only be able to use rhino well but be able to create texture and imagery that has a strange look.

Skill Building

A series of technical exercises build and demonstrate skills in Rhino, laser cutting, 3D printing, and CNC routing.

Project I: Laser engraved textured Fabric

For this project, I was a little stunned at the beginning because I was still terrified of this program. So because of that, I misunderstood the prompt of the project and I created something that was 2D instead of 3D. Instead, I went on to create a textile that was simply unusable because of the acrylic pieces that I glued in the middle of this piece. This was to see how the engraved image would react to hills and valleys.

Project II: Knife from Southern Spain

The knife I chose to model because it has a special meaning to me because of the trip I took to Toledo in the south of Spain where I bought the knife. Since that time I have gotten more into cooking which is why I chose to laser cut out a small serving plate.

Project III: Grasshopper Final

Learning grasshopper was a trip because I never knew such a technology was available to us to use so I had fun playing with this new tool of creating and mapping to create. This learning process reminded me of mind mapping in middle school so this was a trip.
