Sara McGuire – Portfolio

Interdisciplinary Sculpture, 2022

Sara McGuire is an IS major with a concentration in ceramics. A lot of her recent work is fixed around sigils and magick as well as light and mirror work. Sara plans to develop her skills in digital fabrication so that after becoming a vet tech she can use her skills to create inserts and prosthesis for animals that need them.

Skill Building

A series of technical exercises build and demonstrate skills in Rhino, laser cutting, 3D printing, and CNC routing.

Project I: Energy

For this project I made a light piece from two separate laser cut files. It is made from acrylic sheets and card stock sheets. The symbol on the top is a sigil I made that invokes energy. The top half of the piece in removable so that other pieces with different sigils can be put in its place.

Project II: Flower Cups

For this project I 3-D printed three cups I then melted the cups to the point that they were able to be cut and cut them into petals. I then heated up the cut petals and bent them. After that I added the wire and the laser cut leaves. The piece is resented hanging on a wall.

Project III:

Project III was a collaborative class project. Each student created a form in grasshopper that fit together with that stacked on top of the form from the student before them.

Research

A research paper on digital fabrication in veterinary science and its uses, benefits and developments. The paper also includes specific examples and a video from Dr. Michelle Oblek on her use of digital fabrication in the case of Patches the dachhund.
