Yuting Wu, Graphic Design, Graduation Year 2023
Yuting Wu is a Graphic Design senior of MICA. Her recent works range from books, videos to sculptures. She is interested in creating natural and organic shapes in her visual designs and sculptures.
Skill Building
A series of technical exercises build and demonstrate skills in Rhino, laser cutting, 3D printing, and CNC routing.

Project I: White Flower
This work is an exploration on combining soft and hard materials. In general, hard materials are used as supporting and load-bearing structures, while soft materials are attached to hard materials for decoration. In this project, I tried the opposite by using soft materials as a supporting structure. In order to be both functional and aesthetic, I used handcrafted iron rings to connect the soft material with the hard material.

Project II: Hook Abstraction
In my art-making process, I am used to create abstract and random patterns totally based on intuition when making visual designs and sculptures. Therefore, when making this project, my initial thought is to find objects with abstract and organic shapes in daily life. I found a utility hook as my 3D printing prototype. I was inspired by the process of duplication when making visual design in Adobe Illustrator, and I tried to use the hook as one basic design element of my whole “image.”

Project III: Modular Patterns
In this project, our group aim to explore a system that combines different patterns. Considering that most of the members’ initial design included patterns, our strategy was to design a huge installation with projection that contains different patterns. During production, Ian designed the connecting structure including frames and hooks; Yuting, Ashley, and Leyi designed the patterns; Hanshu created the video for projection. The final artwork is a projected installation that includes elements such as flowers, cell division, and abstract shapes.
